Volunteer position:

Communications, phones, foster, driver

How did you first get involved with Safe Wings Ottawa?

A couple of years ago Safe Wings put out a call for a new communications coordinator. As someone with experience in communications who also loves birds, I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to contribute to an important cause.

What are some activities you’ve done as a Safe Wings volunteer?

Managing the Safe Wings social media accounts and website, answering the phone, rescuing and transporting injured and orphaned birds, providing overnight foster care, and outreach.

What has been one of your most memorable experiences so far?

Last year while our founder Anouk was away on vacation, I started fostering injured and orphaned baby birds to provide them with overnight care while the Wild Bird Care Centre was closed. When I am fostering birds I know my job is to keep the birds stable for the night. This can be particularly challenging when you have a baby bird that requires frequent feedings. One night I had several birds to care for including a nestling. It was rewarding to successfully deliver all of them safely to the center the next morning.

Why do you volunteer with Safe Wings?

I’ve always adored birds. As far back as I can remember whenever I’d come across an injured bird I would do as much as possible to try and save it. At Safe Wings, I get the chance to work with other like-minded people like myself to care for these magnificent creatures and advocate for bird conservation. I can’t think of a better way to volunteer my time!

What do you find most rewarding?

The most rewarding aspect for me is definitely saving birds and being able to spread awareness about how bird-friendly building designs can contribute to their conservation. But also, Safe Wings is an incredible network of volunteers across the city, with over 200 people who have signed up to volunteer on occasion and I’m always touched by how people are willing to come together to help out when it takes a group effort. The core group of regular volunteers are also extremely dedicated and knowledgeable and I am constantly learning so much from them. It’s rewarding to work with such fantastic people!
