Safe Wings volunteers documented 4,701 collisions in 2020.
We have recorded 143 species since 2014, including 13 Species at Risk.
Safe Wings estimates that it finds 5 to 10% of collision victims at buildings that are actively monitored by our volunteers, and fewer than 1% of all the victims in Ottawa/Gatineau.
Based on our research, our conservative estimate for the number of birds killed by collisions with glass in this area is 250,000 every year.
Most birds die on impact. Of those that survive the initial collision, many die minutes, hours or days later as a direct result of their injuries, and due to predation or starvation.
