Safe Wings Ottawa Annual Bird Display Highlights the Impact of Glass on Wild Bird Populations
OTTAWA, ON – March 6, 2026 – Unceded and Unsurrendered Algonquin-Anishinaabe Territory
With wild bird populations continuing to decline both locally and globally Safe Wings Ottawa is tackling a critical problem: birds colliding with glass structures. In Ottawa alone approximately we estimate that more than 250,00 birds, including those listed as Species at Risk, perish in these incidents .
Since 2014, Safe Wings Ottawa volunteers have been dedicating their time to researching, preventing and rescuing birds in the Ottawa-Gatineau region and surrounding areas.
Safe Wings Ottawa is excited to invite you to our 11th Annual Bird Display at The Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, ON on March 19th from 4:00pm to 8:00pm, Admission to the museum is free after 5:00pm!
At this special event you will witness the beauty and impact of resident and migratory birds and the role we can all play to help make their populations thrive.
Safe Wings Ottawa volunteers will be available to answer questions about the display and provide more information on how individuals can get involved to help make Ottawa-Gatineau a safer place for birds.

As an entirely volunteer-run organization, Safe Wings Ottawa is dedicated to monitoring buildings, documenting collisions, and saving injured birds. The organization also promotes education on bird-safe window solutions, architectural design, and landscaping. Injured birds in Safe Wings Ottawa’s care are cared for by the organization’s licensed bird rehabilitator with expertise in treating birds harmed by window collisions.
In 2025, Safe Wings Ottawa recorded 2,297 bird collisions representing 88 different species, such as the Eastern Wood-Peewee and Barn Swallow. The upcoming display will exhibit a wide range of species affected by this issue, from Barred Owls to Palm Warblers, demonstrating the vast diversity at risk.
The event also serves as a platform to highlight the continued need for environmental conservation and to push for the adoption of mandatory Bird-Friendly Design standards in municipal codes across Canada, improvements in provincial building codes, and the enforcement of the updated Migratory Bird Regulations.
